After a long wait, our series of 10 adventure-themed design postcards have finally arrived! A lot of thought went into its making, in particular the selection of material – type of coating, thickness and size. We read up extensively and went around the island sampling the different types of postcard materials available in the market. We learnt things we never knew. There was so much we learnt about the types of printing methods, ink and paper, and how they work differently to create so many different combination of results.
Before we started, we knew exactly how we wanted it to look – similar to the 100 postcard collection by Pixar. However, we didn’t know the type of paper and printing used to produce this, and spent some time finding the answers because we both knew we couldn’t settle for something of a poorer quality. So eventually, we found our answers and opted for paper that was coated only on the front side. This made the colours of the postcards really vibrant and pop out the moment you look at it. Take a look at our pictures below! You can even frame the postcards like prints! The back of the postcard wasn’t coated so that ink will be absorbed into the paper when you pen your message, minimising the risk of smudging.
Moving on from the coating, we selected really thick paper! The 380gsm paper gave the cards a sturdy feel. No fear that it will bend or crease easily when you mail it! With a size of 4″x6″ (or 10.2cm x 15.2cm), the postcards would fit snugly into a standard C6 envelope (11.4cm x 16.2cm).
We had a lot on our wish list regarding the type of paper we wanted and it was really a challenge to find a printing company in Singapore that could fulfil them. Having surveyed popular places like Bras Basah and Queensway, we realised majority of the companies only offer paper coated on both sides and they were usually thin. Hence, we ended up engaging a US company to print it for us! It was a huge risk since we couldn’t get hold of a sample postcard. Nevertheless, we were glad that the postcards turned out better than expected!
Next up, packaging for these gorgeous postcards!
