Late August was ‘Chimek, korean bbq, and kimchi on repeat’. 😀
But before the food and fun, we spent four days at the Seoul Illustration Fair, meeting Koreans and sharing with them our suchaehwa (watercolour paintings). It definitely took us some time thinking about how we would pack a booth into a medium-size luggage. For instance, which products, packaging and exhibition panel decoration we should use/bring to reduce the volume and weight. For the first time, we also had to think about the pricing and designs which would work better for the korean market. A great experience for our first ever overseas art fair, and we have learnt so much. The fair ended with a budae jiggae (army stew) buffet and luggage packing, and we were ready for some crazy fun.
Ganghwado was about getting lost and found again (and it doesn’t even matter) on an island where there are only 1-2 buses coming every 2hrs. It was at the same time that we felt so at peace with everything around us, slowly taking in all the quiet yet beautiful scenery and letting time pass without stressing over places we needed to check out. As much as you wish to be transported over to your next location in the next hour, it probably wouldn’t happen because the bus wouldn’t be here and the taxis wouldn’t bother coming over. It was also on this island we had pastries at the most stunning cafes amongst nature and watched North Koreans working in the fields at the Peace Observatory.
Charming with a character of its own, Jeonju was such a lovely place with hanoks everywhere. We ate the best hotteok, Injeolmi flavoured, which we had not seen anywhere else in Seoul, and drank moju, the healthier cousin of makgeolli.
Our third trip to South Korea, but still I think we’ll be back someday (will keep my cute T-Money card properly). A super big thank you to Peppa for being my awesome fair assistant and travel buddy. Every day with you is full of LOLs just like more than a decade ago.
Oh, and here are some doodles from the trip!
